Talk-show tempest, and Carrie Fisher likes homos

by John DuAne Graves ABC's third annual AIDS special, In a New Light '94, will air on July 9th.

The Ricki Lake talk show and its host have come under fire for her handling of a show entitled, "I'm angry because people think I'm gay." According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, eyewitnesses to the show's March 22nd taping reported that the audience became increasingly hostile to the representatives from the gay community that were on the show. When Brad Lamm, one of the gay representatives, spoke of his being gay-bashed the audience cheered. Lamm said, "[Lake] didn't respond to what was going on." After the show, an audience member who had identified himself as being gay was attacked while waiting for an elevator. Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation representative Cathay Che, one of the show's participants said, “it was out of control." Lake was criticized for failing to challenge the inappropriate behavior of the audience. Lake defended herself saying, "Lamm has an agenda. He was put off that we didn't give him more time. I'm more sympathetic than anyone to homosexuality. I grew up hanging out with people like Divine. It's not at all cool that someone got hurt, but it had nothing to do with the issue of the show."

Lesbian stand up comedy star Suzanne Westenhoefer and openly gay Ren and Stimpy producer Jim Ballantine are interviewed in the April 5th edition of the Advocate.

The May, 1994 edition of Out magazine features a cover story on Spanish gay film director Pedro Almodovar and reports on a new anti-gay fiction serial by Mark Olsen, director of communications for Colorado for Family Values. The book, Colorado: 1998, is "set in a very near future where homosexual extremism has prevailed and government serves as the enforcer of 'political correctness.' Although only in serial form now, a right-wing press in Kentucky plans to publish the complete book as a companion to Stephen Bransford's book Gay Politics Vs. Colorado: The Inside Story of Amendment 2.

issue: an interview with gay filmmaker John Waters and a report that recording star Donna Summer may try to mend fences with the gay community she offended with her remarks over 10 years ago. Summer was approached by mega-nightclub owner Doug Ballinger to perform at one of his clubs after the Stonewall 25 march.

Dick Sargent, who portrayed Darrin Stevens on the '60s sitcom Bewitched and who came out of the closet a few years ago, recently announced that he has an incurable cancer. Entertainment Weekly reports that now Sargent is being harassed by ultrahomophobic Baptist minister Fred Phelps who makes it his mission to demonstrate at the funerals of gays and AIDS victims where he and his followers shout things like, "Burn in hell faggot." Phelps sent Sargent a letter stating that he intends to picket Sargent's funeral. Sargent said, "it's a very vicious and hateful letter but it's the only hate mail I ever received in the two years I've been openly gay."

Bryan Lourd, Star Wars actress and author Carrie Fisher's lover who is also the father of her 20-month old daughter, has left Fisher for his gay lover. Fisher was taken by surprise and said in an interview in Women's Wear Daily, "You know I'd love to lie about it, but I can't . . . I was hit by a truck. The separation has been a nightmare. It's too bad 'cause he's a good father." Fisher also fended off longtime rumors that she and her mother Debbie Reynolds were lesbians saying, "She's a powerful, tough woman, but she ain't no dyke. We're both freaked-out heterosexuals failed hetero sexuals, really-but not homosexual. And I like homosexuals."
